What it is
A synthetic version of the naturally occurring growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Not an anabolic steroid. Injected subcutaneously. Effects are slow and require months of consistent use to become apparent. Extremely expensive, which makes it a frequent target for counterfeiting.
What it does
Promotes fat loss, improves recovery, and can increase lean mass over long periods. Used for anti-ageing and body composition goals. Effects are slow and require months of consistent use. Also promotes healing of injuries and can improve sleep quality and skin condition.
Typical dosages
2-4 IU per day for body composition and anti-ageing. Bodybuilders may use significantly higher doses. Injected subcutaneously, typically in the morning or before bed. Cycles are often 3-6 months or longer. This is not a recommendation; it is what is commonly reported.
These figures reflect commonly reported usage in harm reduction communities. They are not recommendations. There is no safe dose of anabolic steroids for non-medical use. Start low and monitor your health through blood work.
Side effects
- Joint pain and swelling
- Water retention, particularly in hands and feet
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Numbness and tingling in extremities
- Increased insulin resistance
- Potential for gut distension ('GH gut') at high doses over prolonged periods
Specific risks
- Tumour growth: HGH can promote the growth of existing tumours. Anyone with a history of cancer or undiagnosed lumps should not use HGH without medical supervision
- Diabetes risk: prolonged use can cause insulin resistance and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, particularly at higher doses
- Adolescent use: some communities encourage boys under 16 to use HGH to grow taller before growth plates close. While this mechanism is scientifically real, unsupervised HGH use in adolescents carries serious risks including abnormal bone growth and long-term endocrine disruption
- Counterfeits: due to extreme cost, HGH is commonly counterfeited. Many products contain little or no active growth hormone
What to watch for
- Persistent joint pain or swelling (dose may be too high)
- Numbness or tingling in hands (carpal tunnel, dose-related)
- Fasting blood glucose levels rising (sign of insulin resistance)
- Changes in shoe or ring size (sign of acromegaly-like effects at high doses)
- Any new lumps or moles changing shape (get checked immediately)
Other compounds
Testosterone
Lower/Moderate RiskThe base of almost every steroid cycle. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and the most commonly used anabolic steroid.
Trenbolone
Extreme RiskOne of the most powerful and dangerous steroids in common use. Extremely potent but with a severe side effect profile that makes it unsuitable for most users.
Anavar (Oxandrolone)
Lower/Moderate RiskOften considered one of the 'milder' oral steroids. Popular among beginners and women. Still carries real risks, particularly to cholesterol and liver values.
